IMDEA Energy is opening a Research Assistant position for the Electrochemical Processes Unit, looking for talented and motivated candidates to work on “development of membrane-free batteries”, on ERC project (Call: ERC-2024-POC).

This project, entitled “3-Phase-BAT: Three-phase Redox Flow Battery”, involves the development of a new type of membrane-free RFB which does not require the use of any membrane since the electrolytes are separated by thermodynamics. This ERC-PoC offers a tremendous opportunity to i) validate this novel technology, ii) explore scaling up as part of the technology transfer process, and iii) define an exploitation pathway to transition our 3-Phase-BAT technology from the lab to industry. This position focuses on research into innovative membrane-free batteries developing new immiscible electrolytes.

The requirements are as follows:

Tasks Description:

  • Research on innovative membrane-free batteries.
  • Formulation and electrochemical characterization of immiscible redox electrolytes.
  • Use of advanced characterization and analytical techniques such as UV-vis, Raman, FTIR,  Ion Chromatography, etc.
  • Design and Manufacturing components for electrochemical cells/reactors.
  • Assembly and testing of electrochemical cells.
  • Dissemination and publication of research results in scientific journals.
Requirements

Compulsory Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar.

Other merits to value:

  • Master degree on Electrochemistry or similar.
  • Specific training or proven skills in design and development of redox flow batteries.
  • Specific training or hands-on experience with immiscible systems.
  • Hands-on experience in characterization tests of redox flow batteries.
  • Experience in writing scientific publications.
  • Oral and written communication skills in English.
Selection Criteria
  • Adequacy of the candidate's training to the requested profile.
  • Work experience related to the profile of the job position.
  • Knowledge of English.
  • Motivation for accomplishing high-quality research.
Conditions
  • Remuneration:  Between 18.000 - 20.500 € gross salary per year, depending upon qualification and expertise.

*The contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security System.

  • Duration of the contract:  Until the end of the project - December 2026.
