Predoctoral Researcher Position to work on stability-aware energy system modeling and planning under high renewable energy penetration

Application Form Deadline: Oct 25th, 2026

IMDEA Energy Institute is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence dedicated to conducting research and development (R&D) in the fields of renewable energy and clean energy technologies, while fostering strong partnerships with leading companies in the energy sector (www.energy.imdea.org).

Description

IMDEA Energy is opening a Predoctoral Researcher Position jointly hosted by the Systems Analysis and Electrical Systems Units, looking for talented and motivated candidates to work at the interface between energy system planning and power system stability, extending long-term planning models to represent the technical requirements of renewable-dominated grids. The work combines methodological development, power- and energy-system modelling, scenario analysis for Spain and Europe, and publication in international journals.

The requirements are as follows:

Tasks Description:

  • Development of methodologies to integrate energy system modeling tools and power system stability analysis tools.
  • Modeling of reactive power requirements and voltage stability margins across transmission network scenarios.
  • R&D in energy system modeling considering grid-related stability constraints and high penetration of converter-interfaced renewable sources.
  • Collection and processing of public/open-access datasets to characterize power system technical parameters relevant to grid dynamics and operability.
  • Development of methodological approaches to represent factors influencing system dynamic response (e.g., inertia and damping) within energy system planning models.
  • Analysis of the impact of energy system planning decisions on grid stability, resilience and operational security in European and/or Spanish scenarios.
  • Communicate and disseminate research results through high-quality scientific channels including high impact scientific publications, presentations in conferences, etc.
  • Supervision of Master or undergraduate studies.
Requirements

Compulsory Requirements:

  • Official Master's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Energy Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field with a strong energy/electrical component.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, Energy or Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

Other merits to value:

  • Knowledge of energy system modeling, power system modeling, renewable energy technologies and multi-vector energy systems.
  • Experience in energy system modeling using dedicated packages.
  • Programming skills (e.g., Python) for power system data analysis and modeling.
  • Experience in power system modeling and simulation using tools such as Matlab/Simulink and/or DigSilent PowerFactory.
  • Experience working with public/open-access power system and energy databases.
  • Oral and written communication skills in English.
Selection Criteria
  • Adequacy of the candidate's training to the requested profile.
  • Work experience related to the profile of the job position.
  • Motivation for accomplishing high-quality research.
  • Knowledge of English.
Conditions
  • Remuneration: Between 22.000€ – 25.000€ per year, depending upon qualification and expertise.

*The contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security System.

  • Duration of the contract: 1 year, possibility of annual renewals depending on performance
