Predoctoral Researcher Position to work on “Higher-Order topology Polymer Electrodes: the key to practical organic BATteries (HOPE‑BAT)"

IMDEA Energy is opening a Predoctoral Researcher Positionfor the Electrochemical Processes Unit, looking for talented and motivated candidates to advance practical organic batteries within the HOPE‑BAT framework (PID2024‑160166OB‑I00). The work centers on redox‑porous polymers (conjugated microporous polymers-CMPs, covalent organic frameworks-COFs, hyper crosslinked polymers-HCPs), post‑synthetic modification and hybridization, and their translation into advanced electrodes (CNT‑supported buckypapers and self‑standing fully polymeric films) and functional Li‑polymer, Zn‑polymer and all‑polymer batteries (coin and pouch cells).
The requirements are as follows:
Tasks Description:
- Synthesis of redox building blocks, porous polymers (CMPs/COFs/HCPs); and their post‑synthetic modification.
- Hybridization with nanocarbons (e.g., SWCNT, rGO, MWCNT) and/or intrinsically conducting polymers (e.g., polyaniline, PEDOT).
- Physical-chemical, textural, and morphological characterization of materials.
- Fabrication of electrodes and their electrochemical testing in 3‑electrode half‑cells (CV, GCD, EIS, GITT).
- Assembly and evaluation of full cells (Li‑polymer, Zn‑polymer, all‑polymer); preliminary pouch‑cell prototyping and KPI benchmarking.
- Communicate and disseminate research results through high-quality scientific channels including high impact scientific publications, presentations in conferences, etc.
- Supervision of Master or undergraduate studies.
Compulsory Requirements:
- Official Master degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Physics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering or similar finished in the last four years.
- Bachelor degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar.
- Prior training or practical experience covering organic synthesis with physicochemical characterization and/or batteries.
Other merits to value:
- Specific training or hands-on experience in polymer synthesis, with emphasize on redox-active organic compounds.
- Specific training or hands-on experience in organic batteries.
- Specific training or hands-on experience in assembling coin-type and/or pouch-type full cells.
- Basic knowledge of electrochemical techniques.
- Hands-on experience with materials characterization and analytical techniques.
- International experience in research centres and/or universities.
- Experience in writing scientific publications.
- Oral and written communication skills in English.
- Adequacy of the candidate's training to the requested profile.
- Work experience related to the profile of the job position.
- Knowledge of English.
- Motivation for accomplishing high-quality research.
- Remuneration: Between 21.500€ – 24.000€ per year, depending upon qualification and expertise.
*The contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security System.
