Postdoctoral Researcher Position at IMDEA Energía to work on “Higher-Order topology Polymer Electrodes: the key to practical organic BATteries (HOPE‑BAT)”

IMDEA Energy Institute is a María de Maeztu Center of Excellence whose objective is to develop R&D activities in the fields of renewable energies and clean energy technologies by establishing strong links with leading companies in the energy sector. (www.energy.imdea.org).

Description

IMDEA Energy is opening a Postdoctoral Researcher Position for the Electrochemical Processes Unit, looking for talented and motivated candidates, tlinked to the HOPE‑BAT project (PID2024‑160166OB‑I00). The project develops next‑generation organic batteries by designing redox‑porous polymers (CMPs, COFs, HCPs), advancing binder‑/collector‑free electrodes (buckypapers and fully polymeric films), and building practical Li‑polymer, Zn‑polymer and all‑polymer prototypes. Work spans polymer synthesis & post‑modification, advanced electrode manufacturing, in‑situ/operando electrochemistry, and electrochemical characterization of coin-cell prototypes.

The requirements are as follows:

Tasks Description:

  • Design, synthesis, post‑synthetic modification, and hybridization of redox‑porous polymers (CMPs/COFs/HCPs) with nanocarbons or conducting polymers.
  • Physico‑chemical and textural characterization (SEM/TEM, XRD, XPS, N₂ sorption, TGA/DSC).
  • Fabrication of advanced electrodes: CNT‑supported buckypapers  and self‑standing fully polymeric films.
  • Assembly and testing of Li‑polymer, Zn‑polymer and all‑polymer cells (mostly coin-cells), targeting high areal capacity and fast charge.
  • Comprehensive electrochemical characterization (CV, GCD, GITT, EIS) and in‑situ/operando IR/Raman to elucidate charge‑storage and degradation mechanisms.
  • Participation in dissemination (high‑impact journals, conferences) and, where relevant, IP protection and tech‑transfer activities.
  • Contribution to proposal writing and supervision/mentoring of Master’s/undergraduate students.
  • Communicate and disseminate research results through high-quality scientific channels including high impact scientific publications, presentation in international conferences, etc.
  • Supervision of Master or undergraduate students.

Requirements

Compulsory Requirements:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Electrochemistry, or related areas.
  • At least two years postdoctoral experience in a research institution outside Spain.
  • Hands‑on experience in organic synthesis, polymer synthesis, organic electronics, and/or electrochemical energy storage (battery electrodes, cell assembly & testing).

Other merits to value:

  • Experience with synthesis of redox building blocks and redox‑active porous polymers (CMPs/COFs/HCPs).
  • Physico‑chemical characterization of materials and basic knowledge on electrochemical characterization and techniques.
  • Application of organic redox compounds, preferably polymers, in organic electronics, with special emphasize on organic batteries.
  • Experience in international research projects/collaborations and scientific writing; open‑science/FAIR data practices.
  • Experience in international research projects and collaborations.
  • Oral and written communication skills in English.

Selection Criteria
  • Adequacy of the candidate's training and experience to the requested profile.
  • Work experience related to the profile of the job position.
  • Knowledge of English.
  • Motivation for accomplishing high-quality research.
Conditions
  • Remuneration: Between 39.000€ – 42.000€ per year, depending upon qualification and expertise.

*The contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security System.

  • Contract: 2 years
